How It Works
SmokeNet was architected and engineered from the ground up with an eye on security and a focus on Zero Trust networking.
With SmokeNet, a new generation of IP tunnel is used. Data ports are constantly changing and, if a location uses more than one carrier, the encrypted data and streaming encryption material are sent across both while rotating at random.
One implementation of SmokeNet works in the network as a hub and spoke system. Switch/Routers are delivered as network appliances. SmokeNet network appliances can be managed directly by your staff or outsourced as a service. Lastly, multiple network appliances can be employed for high availability.
Simplicity and Security
This simplicity also increases security. Because there is no small, short key to be stolen, SmokeNet is not susceptible to someone quickly gaining access, stealing a key and then decrypting data remotely.
Brute force attacks on current encryption happen all the time and Quantum Computers represent one of many looming threats. Recording data in a network is relatively trivial and, even if data is encrypted, it can always be decrypted later when processing power increases. SmokeNet’s Streaming Encryption doesn’t need keys, instead using an ever changing stream of randomness. For extremely high security, the Streaming Encryption material is not calculated but derived from real world sources like fluctuations in temperature, heat, or light measured to a high level of precision. That high precision value is chaotically random and unpredictable.
SmokeNet can not be recorded directly by any means known in the network. Currently, it’s very easy to record VPN and, most concerning, Cloud Service data from any Internet or WAN router. Man in the Middle recordings are also possible. As described, SmokeNet moves data around in a way that makes this kind of recording impossible. Adding multiple carriers vastly increases even the theoretical difficulty of in-network recording.
SDWAN Like Features
SmokeNet has critical features similar to SD WAN. It can stripe across multiple carriers, provide autofailover and also load balancing. You get all these features in a solution that is networked and highly secure. So why bother with point to point SDWAN? With SmokeNet you get a network of failover and high security.
A SmokeNet network starts with an SNSR Switch/Router, a hardware network appliance that is the core device in a SmokeNet network. These are ready to use out of the box. Configuration and management is done through an easy to use UI. Provisioning of new connections could not be simpler, translating to quicker install times and eliminating the need for specialized technical knowledge.
SNSR units can be purchased directly by Telecom companies, while businesses can purchase services as part of a managed service solution through a Telecom company acting as a Managed Service Provider (MSP). The managed service solution takes all the worry out of working with the technology. The MSP will constantly monitor for problems, ensuring SmokeNet Networks are up and running properly.
Documentation and training are available to allow your staff the necessary levels of control over the SmokeNet network.
SmokeNet Client Gateways
The other key component to a SmokeNet network is the client. Isolating your network client from the operating system on your computer or other device is an important component of your security. SmokeNet Client Gateways are delivered as hardware, eliminating the need to install software on individual computers. This makes it possible for multiple users to share a single secure connection to a SmokeNet Switch/Router. SmokeNet Gateways are available for purchase to use with either managed or unmanaged solutions.
SG Series Clients
SmokeNet SG gateways are designed for small to medium size offices. Various models have connections for one connection or up to 3 carriers at once. Each gateway is powerful enough to handle up to 50 users. These are also perfect for home use for remote users. They can also connect to a single server or computer to provide quick, easy access without the hassle of installing and managing software.
Like with the SmokeNet Switch/Routers, the gateways can be managed in house or as a service. The managed service allows businesses to quickly gain the benefits of SmokeNet without the need for specialized experts.
SNAP Series Clients
The SmokeNet SNAP series is a collection of clients designed for use by a single user or small group. The SNAP1 is a USB device that connects to a device like a laptop and allows the user to connect to the SmokeNet network securely through virtually any WiFi network. The SNAP5 is a small WiFi access point – about the size of two standard decks of cards – that connects to a router’s Ethernet port and hosts its own secure SmokeNet WiFi network supporting up to five WiFi connections. The SNAP20 works like the SNAP5, but has a larger footprint – smaller than a Mac Mini – and supports up to twenty WiFi connections. All of these clients adhere to common networking standards, so they work with virtually any device that can connect to them.
